When General Officers were next properly appointed, the highest authorised rank in the US Army was Major-General, and the senior Major-General on the Army rolls was referred to as the Commanding General of the United States Army, or, less officially, as General-in-Chief. Secretaries of War from 1821 designated a General to be in charge of the field forces without formal congressional approval.
